ATLANTA (Feb. 3) ? Georgia State's
Brittany Hollins hit a three-point basket with 4.9 seconds remaining to lift the host Panthers to a 66-64 upset over second-place Towson in a CAA game on Super Bowl Sunday.
In a game that included 13 ties and 11 lead changes, the Panthers got six points from Hollins in the final 1:01 as the teams traded the lead four times in that span.
Georgia State (6-14, 3-6) led at the half by 33-29 and for a stretch of 21 minutes until Towson got a lead at 44-43 with 12 minutes left and the see-saw ride began until the end of the game.
State was led by Hollins' 16 points, her 14th consecutive in double figures, to go with her five assists and three steals. Forward
Shay Rawls tied her personal-best with 15 rebounds and scored 12 points for her seventh double-double game of the season. Forward
Danyiell McKeller tied for the team scoring lead with 16 points and added seven rebounds.
Towson (15-5, 7-2) had won 11 of its previous 12 games heading into today. The Tigers were led by guard Holly Mahan's 24 points and guard Shanae Baker-Brice's 18 points.
Georgia State held a 37-35 rebound advantage, but Towson's 19 offensive rebounds kept them alive. State shot 56.5 percent in the second half (13-of-23) and 51.9 percent for the game. While the Tigers were cool from the floor (33.8 percent), they were hot from the free throw line (82 percent on 18-of-22).
“I knew I had to have the ball down the stretch and on that last possession,” Hollins said.
“I am our team's play maker and that is what I am supposed to do. I figured if they cut off the drive, I could drop back and take the 3, so I did. Our team showed some heart and desire today and we need to keep that level going for the rest of the season.”
“The kids stayed mentally and physically tough all 40 minutes today,” Coach
Lea Henry noted. “I am happy for them to get a big win like this after some of our previous games this year. Rawls, McKeller and Hollins played especially well today. Our offensive understanding and execution was better today and we rebounded when we had to as well.”
Visiting Towson jumped out 11-4 at 17:10 for its largest lead of the game. Georgia State jumped right back with a 10-1 run to gain the lead at 14-12 after six points by McKeller with 12:50 on the clock. State grew its lead to 20-14 and then 29-20 at 4:44 in the first half, but Towson hit four free throws in the final 45 seconds to close to 33-29 at the break.
In the second half, State held a 38-33 lead after three minutes. After ties and lead changes for the next 10 minutes, State was up 55-54 with five minutes to play.
Mahan hit back-to-back layups to put Towson up 58-55 with four minutes left. But, an old-fashioned three-point play by Rawls tied it again. A pair of Mahan free throws was answered by a Hollins jumper for a tie at 60 with 2:05. A pair of Davis free throws was answered by a Hollins free throw, a missed free throw with an offensive rebound that led to another Hollins jumper and the State lead at 63-62 with 42 seconds. Towson's Baker-Brice got an offensive rebound and follow with 21 seconds to give Towson its last lead.
This marks the second time in three years that State has beaten Towson in Atlanta on Super Bowl Sunday. Georgia State has beaten Towson all five times the teams have played as CAA members.
Georgia State returns to action Thursday at Drexel in Philadelphia.
