Women Win By 10 Over Ragin' Cajuns

Birmingham, AL (Dec. 15) - Georgia State won its third straight game and advanced to the Tuesday championship game in the UAB Blazer Invitational by defeating Louisiana Lafayette, 68-58.

Freshman guard Jylisa Williams poured in 23 points from the outside and junior forward Dana Olsen sent home 20 points down low, while junior forward Danyiell McKeller had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to pace the offense.

The Panther defense kept their streak alive of having at least 10 steals in every game this season. They forced 23 Ragin' Cajun turnovers today.

“We were pleased with our half-court execution of our offense today and were patient in getting the ball down low to our two post players,” Coach Henry noted of the third straight win. The Panthers had topped 80 points in three of the first five games, but did not have the ultra-fast tempo they are used to tonight. “We had a strong beginning in both halves and we were patient in getting the ball inside and finishing with points.”

“Jylisa (Williams) played a great game,” Henry noted of the freshman who drilled 11-of-18 shots, while adding six rebounds and three assists. Olsen (9-of-16) and McKeller (7-of-13) were strong and steady in the paint, while combining for 18 rebounds.

“I was just enjoying the moment and doing what I could,” said Williams, the Georgia 5A Player of the Year from state champion Stephenson High. “I am just happy to help my team win and do whatever I can.”

Georgia State wasted no time in getting a double-digit lead by roaring out to a 14-2 advantage in the first six minutes. But, Louisiana Lafayette closed back to 35-30 at halftime thanks to four three-point baskets.

In the second half, State did just about the same with a 16-2 run in the first six and a half minutes to take control 51-32. Georgia State shot 51.9% from the field in the second half and 48.4% for the game.

Georgia State (4-2) will face the winner of the Alabama State-UAB game in tomorrow's championship game of the Blazer Invitational.
