Volleyball Falls to VCU in Home Finale

The Georgia State Volleyball once again started hot out of the gate, but the second place VCU Rams were too much for the Panthers, earning a four set win at the Sports Arena on Sunday. The Panthers (3-23, 2-10 CAA) were led by sophomore Ashley Jones' sixth triple-double of the season, while freshman Muki Kangwa and sophomore Rachel Boryc also added double-digit kill performances.

The Panthers hot play was evident from the start. Led by three kills by Liz Schaab, the Panthers took at 5-0 lead out of the gate, before VCU (18-9, 9-3) called a timeout. State would continue to apply pressure all throughout the set, though the Rams would make a charge late and tie the score at 20. The Panthers would come right back and after kills by Schaab and Boryc, take a three-point lead. The two teams would exchange the final points, with State taking the first set, 25-22.

Georgia State would fall behind early in the second set, though put together a late rally. After falling behind 5-1, State would cut the deficit to one at 5-4. VCU would build a seven point lead on an ace by Lenka Melicharkova, before the Panthers would rally again. A kill by Boryc cut the deficit to two at 13-11 and a kill by senior Michelle Trimble later in the set would cut the deficit back to two again at 21-19. The Panthers would finally cut the deficit to one at 24-23, but a kill by VCU's Ariel Newman earned the Rams the second set, 25-23.

State would fall behind early again in the third set and trail 6-2 before Head Coach Mike Webster used a time-out to calm his team. The Rams frontline offensive attack would continue to prove too much and would build the lead to eight on a kill by Mariel Frey. The Panthers cut the deficit to six at 21-15 on a kill by Kangwa, but that was the closest they would get in the third, falling 25-16.

The Panthers would come out fighting in the fourth set as neither team built more than a one point lead before the score was tied at 9-9. VCU would then go on a 7-1 run, capped by a kill by Marketa Janeckova to take a 16-10 lead and never look back. The Rams would take the fourth and final set, 25-15.

Jones finished the match with 10 kills, 18 assists and 10 digs, while Boryc has a team high 13 kills. Kangwa finished the match with 10 kills and no errors for a .385 attack percentage. Freshman Chelsea Perry tied Jones with a team high 18 assists, while redshirt-sophomore Audrey Cantrell scored 20 digs.

The Rams were led by Jessica Ojukwa's 13 kills, while Cat Juson had a match high 30 assists.

Georgia State will play its final two match of the season on the road next Friday and Saturday. Friday night, the Panthers will take on James Madison starting at 7:00 p.m. and then travel to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
