Volleyball Falls in Season Finale

The Georgia State Volleyball team fell in their season finale on Saturday night to George Mason in four sets, 3-1. The Panthers (3-25, 2-12 CAA) were led by sophomore Ashley Jones, who just missed out on her seventh triple-double of the season.

Entering Saturday night's play, Jones was one triple-double ahead of North Dakota State's Jennifer Lopez for the national lead with six. The sophomore scored 8 kills, 16 assists and nine digs. Lopez has one regular season match left to tie Jones for the national lead.

Senior Liz Schaab, playing in her final match with the Panthers, made it a memorable one, scoring 14 kills, four digs and three blocks. Michelle Trimble, also playing in her final match, had a team-high four blocks and finished the season as the team leader with 70.

The Patriots improved to 9-18 and 5-9 in CAA play with the win.

After falling 25-19 and 25-13 in the first two sets, the Panthers used the intermission to collect themselves and come out strong in the third set. The teams would exchange points early as the set would feature 10 ties and five lead changes. After falling behind 13-12, the Panthers would use a 7-0 run, capped by a kill by Schaab, to take a commanding 19-13 lead. Although the Patriots would try to climb back into the set, Georgia State would put the set away, taking the third 25-21.

The momentum would carry over early in the fourth set as State took a 5-4 lead on a kill by Schaab. Unfortunately, that is where the momentum would run out. George Mason would take command and use a handful of blocks to take the final set, 25-13.

Freshman Chelsea Perry added 12 assists for the Panthers, while redshirt-sophomore Audrey Cantrell scored a team-high 16 digs. Boryc added 11 kills for State.

Rebecca Walter had a team-high 12 kills for George Mason, while Noelle Fanella added eight. Fernanda Bartels scored a match-high 36 assists.

The Panthers will return a young nucleus in 2009. Although State will lose Schaab and Trimble to graduation, State will continue to build on a team that had a total of three upperclassmen this year.
