The Georgia State volleyball concluded their four-match road trip with a 3-0 loss to Delaware on Saturday night. The Panthers (1-21, 1-8 CAA) started the match strong, but led by CAA Preseason Player-of-the-Year Stephanie Barry, the Blue Hens (12-13, 6-3 CAA) proved too much for State's frontline.
Georgia State was led by senior Liz Schaab's nine kills and four digs, while freshman Chelsea Perry added 14 assists.
The Panthers would come out strong in the first set and take an 8-6 lead on a block assist by senior Michelle Trimble and sophomore Alysa Long. The Blue Hens would use a 6-1 run to take a 12-9 lead, but State would cut the deficit to one on a kill by Long at 13-12. Delaware would use another 5-0 run and the Panther offensive attack would not be enough to get State back into the set, as the Blue Hens took the first set 25-18.
Delaware would come out strong in the second set and State would never find their rhythm. Although State would trail only 6-4 after an attack error by Delaware's Katie Dennehy, the Blue Hens would use a 9-0 run to run away with the set, taking it by a final of 25-11.
State would come out strong in the third set and control the ball for most of the set. The Panthers would use an early 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead and build the margin to four on a kill by Schaab at 11-7. On a Kim Stewart service error, the Panthers would hold their last lead of the set at 15-14, as Delaware used a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach. The Blue Hens would take the final set 25-18.
Delaware got double-digit kills from Dennehy, Elena DelleDonne and Paige Erickson, while Jess Chason added a match-high 38 assists.
The Panthers will return home to face Kennesaw State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. As a reminder to fans, admission to the Sports Arena is free of charge.
