Sophomore Chase Childers drove in Georgia State's (20-20, 9-9) only run as the Panthers fell to Northeastern University today 7-1 in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series in Brookline, Mass.
State's run was the first of the game, as in the second inning Childers singled back up the middle, scoring junior Luke Gordon to give the Panthers the early advantage. The lead would last until the fourth, as Northeastern (19-10, 10-8) scored seven unanswered runs to take control of the game. Back-to-back solo homers to start the fourth by Mike Lyon and Dan Milano gave the Huskies the lead. The home team would chase Panthers starting pitcher Jeramy Compton with four runs in the fifth, with the last run coming off a triple by Frank Pessanello and a safety squeeze off the bat of Garrett Chin.
Trevor Smith allowed one run on five hits and a walk in eight innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. Compton took the loss, giving up six earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Senior Adam Bowling gave up a run in 2.1 innings of work, while freshman Brandon McCreery gave up a lone hit in the eighth inning for the Panthers.
This was the first game in the series that Northeastern has outhit the Panthers, as Georgia State had six hits compared to 10 for the home team. Grodon and Matt Van Horn each had two hits, while Childers and senior Eric Suttle had the other two.
The Panthers will continue their longest road trip of the season when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern in a two-game series beginning this Tuesday.
