State Clips UNCW Wings in OT

ATLANTA (Feb. 8, 2007) ? Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led three Georgia State players in double figures with 15 points as the Panthers rallied from nine points down in the second half to earn a thrilling 61-57 Colonial Athletic Association overtime victory over UNC Wilmington Thursday evening at the Georgia State Sports Arena. The contest marked the second OT game against the Seahawks this season.

The Panthers (14-9, 6-6 CAA) out scored the Seahawks (7-15, 3-8 CAA) 8-4 in the extra frame. Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored her only two field goals of the contest in overtime. Her layup with 3:04 remaining tied the contest at 57-all and her jumper with 32 seconds left gave State a four point cushion, 61-57.

Seahawk forward Lori Drake, who finished with a game-high 21 points, missed four 3-point attempts at the end of the game and forward Sahsha Taylor also couldn't connect in the waning seconds, allowing Georgia State to earn a regular season sweep of UNC Wilmington. The contest also marked a school-record fourth overtime game this season for the Panthers.

Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) scored 12 and collected a career-high seven rebounds for the Panthers. Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) totaled a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with nine points and a game-high seven blocked shots.

Georgia State never had the lead in the first half and trailed 30-24 at halftime. The Panthers struggled with 14 turnovers at the break and shot only 32 percent in the period. The Seahawks, however, couldn't take advantage, hitting only 27 percent from the floor.

Trailing 40-31 with 10:37 left in regulation, Georgia State picked up its full court pressure defense and went on a 16-2 run, fueled by seven points from Roegiers-Jensen and four from Head, in staking its first lead of the contest. The Panthers led 47-42 with 3:52 left, and 53-50 with 21 seconds on the clock after two made free throws from Roegiers-Jensen, who finished with 11 in the period after scoring only two points in the first half.

After a Seahawk timeout, Drake nailed a game-tying 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. Shade Smith, who made a steal off a turnover from David, raced down the court for a game-winning layup, but Roegiers-Jensen forced Smith to miss the easy attempt, forcing the overtime session.

"We didn't play well in the first half," stated Georgia State head coach Lea Henry. "At halftime, we talked about effort and picking up the tempo offensively. We didn't start to turn it on until 15 minutes left in the second half. This is a young team with good spirit. They stayed with it tonight and refused to lose."

Georgia State shot 33 percent for the game compared to 29 for UNCW. The Seahawks out rebounded State, 53-51.

Georgia State concludes its two-game home stand Sunday with a 2 p.m. tip off against Towson.
