ATLANTA (Feb. 7, 2007) ? Georgia State's women's basketball team hosts Colonial Athletic Association foe UNC Wilmington Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Georgia State Sports Arena. The Panthers are looking for the regular season series sweep of the Seahawks.
Thursday's game will be broadcast live over the Internet at GeorgiaStateSports.com and www.wras.org and on the radio at WRAS-FM (88.5) in Atlanta. In conjunction with the game, the Georgia State Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) will hold its women's basketball tailgate party. The contest will also mark State's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
The Panthers (13-9, 5-6 CAA) and the Seahawks are locked in a 2-2 tie in the all-time series. State, which has captured two straight over UNCW, won the previous meeting this season in thrilling fashion, owning a 78-76 double overtime win in Wilmington, N.C. Neither team has won on its home court in the series. Georgia State is 2-0 against the Seahawks in Wilmington, and UNC Wilmington is 2-0 versus the Panthers in Atlanta.
The Panthers have split each of their two weekly games for the past five weeks en route to a 5-5 record since the start of January.
A victory over UNC Wilmington Thursday moves the Panthers back to .500 in league action for the third time this season and positions the team in no worse than a tie for fifth in the league standings. State is 6-3 at home and 2-3 at home against conference opponents.
UNC Wilmington (7-14, 3-7 CAA) has won two of three after dropping 10 of its last 11. The Seahawks are 3-8 on the road this season and 2-4 on the road against CAA foes.
Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.), paces State's offense, averaging 17.5 points per game, which ranks 56th nationally in scoring average. She is third on the team in rebounding at 5.7 boards per contest and leads the team, the CAA and is second nationally in assists with 6.7 per outing.
Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) is fifth on the team in scoring (9.8 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.9 rpg). Another freshman, guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.), is also averaging in double figures, totaling 10.8 per contest to rank third. David, the reigning CAA rookie of the week, is the team's top 3-point threat, connecting at 43 percent from beyond the arc and leads State with 50 treys. Her 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals made per game (2.5) rank 18th and 29th, respectively, in the nation.
Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) is Georgia State's top rebounder, collecting 8.5 boards per game; she scores 11.0 points per contest, ranking second on the team. Guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.), is having an all-CAA type season, holding averages of 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds 5.1 assists and 3.5 steals per game. Her steals per game average leads the CAA and is listed fifth in the nation.
Senior Lori Drake leads UNC Wilmington in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.3 and 8.3, respectively. Sophomore Sahsha Taylor is next, posting 12.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
