Georgia State Battles in Loss at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (Feb. 4, 2007) ? Georgia State's women's basketball team battled hard against Delaware for 27 minutes, but the Fightin' Blue Hens used a 13-0 run midway through the second period en route to an 85-66 victory over the visiting Panthers in Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

 

Georgia State freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) scored 19 points, going 5-for-9 from the beyond the arc, to pace the Panthers, who fall to 13-9 overall and 5-6 in CAA. Delaware, which is receiving votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' polls, wins its 12th straight at home to improve to 19-3 on the season and 10-1 in league play.

 

Panthers' sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) collected 17 points and tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds. Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored 14 and tied the school record for career three-pointers (131) after making 3-of-7 from 3-point range.

 

Senior Tyresa Smith tallied 16 first-half points en route to a game-high 24 to lead four Hens in double figures. Forward Chrissy Fisher made 22 and added nine boards and five steals. Guard Kyle DeHaven totaled 16 and a game-high six assists and Alena Koshansky collected 10 points.

 

State trailed 37-27 at halftime, but opened the second period on a 7-0 run, capped by a layup from Head, to trail 37-34 with 18:39 left. Down 50-46 at the 13:56 mark, Fisher connected on a 3-pointer to ignite the 13-0 spurt that saw the Hens take a 17-point advantage with 11:52 left in the game.

 

Head made consecutive free throws to halt the run, but Delaware continued to take advantage of missed opportunities by Georgia State, building the lead to 28 points, 83-55, with 3:05 left in the contest. State finished the contest on an 11-2 run over the last three minutes for the final margin.

 

Georgia State shot 48 percent from the floor, but committed 29 turnovers in the game. Delaware, which made 47 percent of its field goals, commanded a huge advantage from the charity stripe, going 23-of-27 for the game, including 16-of-19 in the second half, compared to 10-for-14 for the Panthers (7-of-7 in the second period). Midway through the second half, the foul differential was 8-0 in favor of the Hens.

 

Georgia State returns home for two contests, beginning with a 6 p.m. tilt against UNC Wilmington Thursday at the Sports Arena.
