Georgia State Downed 78-67 at VCU

Richmond, Va. (Feb. 25, 2007) ? Georgia State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored a game-high 27 points as the Panthers fell at Va. Commonwealth 78-67 in their final road game of the regular season Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action.

 

The contest marked a season-high fourth straight loss for the Panthers (15-13, 7-10 CAA), while the Rams post their fifth consecutive victory and improve to 16-11 overall (9-8 CAA).

 

Freshman forward/center RaShay Rawls (Augusta, Ga.) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Brittany Hudson (Tallahassee, Fla.) came off the bench to register 10 points.

 

Va. Commonwealth guard Brittany Pinkney led the Rams with a career-high 21 points, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Quanitra Hollingsworth had 20 and junior Krystal Vaughn added 15 off the bench.

 

With the score tied at 34-all with 17:19 remaining in the game, the Rams used a 20-7 run to stake a 56-41 advantage with 9:53 left. Hollingsworth had eight and Vaughn added six during the spurt.

 

The Panthers were still behind by 15 at the 7:45 mark, but cut the deficit down to three, 69-66, with 3:15 on the clock. Hudson and Roegiers-Jensen combined on three straight 3-pointers to move State to within eight. Rawls closed the comeback with a layup that pulled the Panthers to within 69-66.

 

Georgia State's offense stalled down the stretch, as the Rams converted 9-of-14 free throws to seal the win.

 

Va. Commonwealth out scored Georgia State 52-37 in the second period. The Rams made 10 free throws over the final four minutes. Both teams shot well in the second period. The Panthers fired off at a 52 percent clip (13-of-25), while the Rams made 17-of-26 (65 percent) from the floor.

 

After recording only nine first half turnovers, State tallied 14 miscues in the second frame and finished the contest with 23. Va. Commonwealth scored 35 points off the Panthers' errors and totaled 16 second chance points after out rebounding State, 34-28.

 

VCU opened the first half on a 12-0 run in the first five minutes behind six points from Pinkney. The Panthers rallied over the next 10 minutes to trail 20-18 as Roegiers-Jensen tallied nine.

 

Trailing 20-24, Georgia State, which held the Rams to two free throws over the final five minutes of the stanza, finished the half on a 10-2 run, sinking two 3-pointers from freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) and Roegiers-Jensen for a 30-26 halftime lead.

 

Georgia State shot 50 percent from the floor and 57 percent from 3-point range. VCU made 19-of-32 free throws compared to only 7-of-12 for the Panthers.

 

State closes out the regular season Thursday when the team hosts Old Dominion at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
