WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 22, 2007) ? Georgia State made 3-of-4 free throws in overtime, but finished 0-for-9 from the field in the extra session in falling at Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary Thursday evening at William & Mary Hall. State drops its third consecutive game and moves to 7-9 in league play (15-12 overall), while the Tribe improves to 8-8 in the CAA (16-11 overall) and snaps a two-game skid.
The contest marked the fifth overtime game this season for Georgia State, extending its single-season record. State is 3-2 in overtime games this year.
The Panthers led by five, 49-44, with 40 seconds remaining in regulation, but saw that lead evaporate after Sarah Stroh nailed two straight 3-pointers, the last with seven seconds left, to tie the contest at 50-all.
State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds (her fourth career double-double) sank the front end of a one-and-one with 7 seconds on the clock to give the Panthers a 50-47 lead. Georgia State had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but could not get off an effective shot with one second left.
In the overtime, Georgia State sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Panthers a 51-50 lead with four minutes left. Roegiers-Jensen tied the match at 53-all following back-to-back free throws with 55 seconds remaining.
William & Mary kept the game close, making only 2-of-6 free throws in the final minute as the Panthers failed to make good on two layups to either tie or win the game in overtime.
Freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) tallied a team-high 14 points and added a career-high 10 rebounds for Georgia State. Freshman forward/center RaShay Rawls (Augusta, Ga.) notched a team- and career-high 12 rebounds and contributed nine points off the bench.
Panther sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) posted eight points and six assists. She collected three steals to become the school single-season record holder with 88.
Forward Kyra Kaylor registered game-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds for William & Mary. Stroh and Katy Neumer each logged 15 points.
State led by as many as 11 points (19-8) 10 minutes into the first half. Leading 25-18 with 4:26 left, the Tribe finished the half on a 10-1 run to stake a 28-26 halftime lead, and opened the second period on a 6-1 spurt for a 34-27 advantage with 15:54 remaining. State battled back to tie the match at 38-all with 8:25 left after a 3-pointer from Roegiers-Jensen.
The Panthers extended the margin to five on two occasions late in the second period before Stroh hit her consecutive 3-pointers to tie.
Georgia State shot 31 percent from the floor compared to 29 percent for William & Mary. The Panthers out rebounded the Tribe 56-44.
Georgia State visits Va. Commonwealth Sunday at 2 p.m. for its final regular season road game.
