ATLANTA (Feb. 18, 2007) ? Georgia State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led all scorers with a career-high 33 points as the Panthers fell to visiting Hofstra 86-74 Sunday afternoon on "Senior Day" at the Georgia State Sports Arena in front of a stellar crowd of 1,228 in attendance.
Georgia State took its first lead of the second half (69-68) with 8:58 left in the game following a layup from sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.). However, Hofstra guard Cigi McCollin nailed a three-pointer to spark an 11-1 run that gave the Pride a nine-point margin, 79-70 with five points left on the clock.
Roegiers-Jensen scored her 33rd point off a jumper at the 4:42 mark and Hollins' field goal at 4:12, which trimmed the deficit to 80-74, would be State's last of the period. The Pride tallied the final six points of the contest en route to the final score.
Hollins recorded 15 points for Georgia State and sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) added 10. Freshman forward/center RaShay Rawls (Augusta, Ga.) came off the bench to tie her career-high with a team-best 11 rebounds.
Center Vanessa Gidden led four Hofstra players in double figures with 20 points. Lizanne Murphy posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. McCollin finished with 17 and Samantha Brigham came off the bench to nail 13.
Roegiers-Jensen scored 18 of her 33 points in the first half. State took an early lead, but trailed 14-12 with 12:08 in the stanza. A layup from Murphy fueled a 12-2 run for the Pride who staked a 26-14 advantage with 9:04 on the clock.
The Panthers battled back to tie the contest at 34-all with 2:57 left in the first half behind five points each from Roegiers-Jensen and Head. Georgia State would go into halftime trailing by three, 45-42, and neither team led by more than six points over the first 10 minutes of the second period.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor as Georgia State connected on 45 percent of its field goals and Hofstra shot 42 percent. Rebounding was also fairly even with the Pride leading, 39-38.
The difference proved to be free throw shooting with State making 19-of-31 for 61 percent and HU going 22-of-29 for 76 percent. The Pride also scored 18 points off of 16 Panthers' miscues and totaled 28 points from the bench compared to six for Georgia State.
Prior to the contest, Roegiers-Jensen, student assistant Alisea Rucker and team manager Dolly Pope were recognized for their contributions to the women's basketball program.
Georgia State goes on the road for its next two contests, visiting CAA foe William & Mary Thursday at 7 p.m. and Va. Commonwealth Sunday at 2 p.m. All three teams are battling for the No. 5 position in the CAA standings.
