Be on TV as Georgia State Hosts Hofstra

ATLANTA (Feb. 17, 2007) ? Georgia State tangles with Hofstra Sunday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Georgia State Sports Arena. The contest will be broadcast live on four regional sports networks, including Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS), and will be shown in more than 12 million households in five of the largest media markets on the East Coast, including Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.

 

Sunday's game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at GeorgiaStateSports.com and www.wras.org and on the radio at WRAS-FM (88.5) in Atlanta. Live stats and audio/video of the game will be available from the GeorgiaStateSports.com.  

 

The Panthers remain in good position in the latest CAA standings, despite their loss from Thursday night. State (15-10, 7-7 CAA), which has won four of its last six, is tied for fifth in the league standings, and can move closer to fourth with a victory over Hofstra (19-6, 9-5 CAA), which currently occupies that position and is ahead by two games.

 

Hofstra leads the all-time series, 5-1. The Pride topped the Panthers 66-48 in Hempstead, N.Y. back on Dec. 3, 2006. Georgia Statea has won its last three at home and is 8-3 at the Sports Arena this season. The Panthers are 4-3 at home against the league.

 

The Pride has won three straight contests and four of its last five. Hofstra is 10-4 on the road and 4-3 on the road against conference opponents.

 

Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.), paces State's offense, averaging 17.3 ppg, which ranks 56th nationally in scoring average. She is fourth on the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per contest and leads the team in assists with 6.5 per outing, ranking 5th nationally. Her 82.4 percent free throw shooting is tops on the squad and listed 74th in the nation.

 

Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) is fifth on the team in scoring (8.9 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.8 rpg). Another freshman, guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.), is averaging in double figures, totaling 10.5 per contest to rank third on the team. David is the team's top 3-point threat, connecting at 41 percent from beyond the arc and leads State with 55 treys. Her 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals made per game (2.4) rank 28th and 35th, respectively, in the nation.

 

Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.), the reigning CAA Player of the Week, is Georgia State's top rebounder, collecting 8.8 boards per game, which is 59th nationally; she scores 11.4 points per contest, ranking second on the team. Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) is having an all-CAA type season, holding averages of 10.2 points, 3.9 rebounds 5.4 assists and 3.4 steals per game. Her steals per game average leads the CAA and is listed 7th in the nation, while Hollins' assists per game average is 25th.

 

Senior Cigi McCollin is Hofstra's top scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game. Senior Vanessa Gidden owns a 14.2 ppg average and collects 7.8 boards per game. Also in double figures are Lana Harshaw (11.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Lizanne Murphy (10.7 ppg, 9.2 rpg).

 

Sunday's game has been designated as "Girl Scout Appreciation Day," with the goal of teaching girls the many benefits that can be gained from participating in athletics.

 

Girl scouts are invited to attend Sunday's game and cheer on their Panthers. A variety of activities are planned in conjunction with the game and scouts are encouraged to participate.
