ATLANTA (Feb. 11, 2007) ? In a contest that left little doubt that Georgia State is ready to finish out the Colonial Athletic Association regular season on a very high note, the Panthers roared past visiting Towson by 46 points, 89-43, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Georgia State Sports Arena.
The contest was the most lop-sided win of the season for Georgia State (15-9, 7-6 CAA) and is the largest margin of victory for the team in a CAA game since joining the league last year. The Panthers, who earn their second consecutive win and fourth in five outings, record a season-sweep of the Tigers for the second straight year and move to 4-0 all-time in the series. State also moves above .500 in the league play for the first time in two seasons. Towson sees its two-game win streak come to a close as it falls to 16-7 (7-6 CAA).
Georgia State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) combined to score more points (56) than the entire Towson roster (43). Roegiers-Jensen finished with a game-high 31 points, including five 3-pointers to set the school record for treys made in a career with 136. Head recorded her sixth double-double of the season and ninth of her career with a career-high 25 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Head also totaled six blocked shots to become the school single-season leader with 60. Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) registered eight points, six boards, four steals and a game-high 10 assists.
"Every player worked hard and played well today," expressed Roegiers-Jensen. "The chemistry on this team is the best I've seen in my four years here. Everyone shares the ball, we find the open player and we try to create opportunities for one another. We have to maintain this intensity and chemistry for the remainder of the season. I'm very happy that I was able to break the 3-point record in front of my parents who are here today."
Georgia State, which never trailed in the game, connected on 35 field goals and tied its season-high of 28 assists that it set at Towson on Feb. 1. The Panthers' out scored the Tigers 56-22 in the second period and shot 71 percent from the floor in the stanza. State finished the contest shooting 62.5 percent (35-56), which is the second-best single-game mark in school history and the first time the Panthers have shot over 60 percent in a game since Dec. 7, 2001.
Leading 14-13 with 7:30 left in the first period, Reogiers-Jensen scored 12 during a Georgia State 17-4 run over the next six minutes that gave the Panthers a 31-15 advantage with 1:38 remaining. The two teams settled on a 33-21 halftime score as Georgia State made 50 percent from the floor and held Towson to 30 percent shooting.
Towson got as close as nine points in the second period, 33-24, with 18:15 left in the game. From there it was all Head and Roegiers-Jensen who combined for 35 of the Panthers' 56 second-half points. State's lead ballooned to 45-26 with 14:53 left and 67-30 with 8:37 remaining. Towson was held to only one 3-point field goal over the final four minutes as Georgia State routed the Tigers to the 89-43 final.
Freshman Alexis Abraham led Towson with nine points. Holly Mahan totaled a team-high five rebounds. Georgia State out rebounded Towson, 52-27, and held the Tigers to a season-low 43 points.
