Roegiers-Jensen's 26 Helps Tame Tigers

TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 1, 2007) ? Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led five Georgia State players in double figures with a game-high 26 as the Panthers topped host Towson 87-81 Thursday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play at the Towson Center.

 

Georgia State posts its second consecutive victory and third straight over Towson to improve to 13-8 overall, and evens its record in the CAA to 5-5. State moves into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with Towson (5-5 CAA) which falls to 14-6 overall.

 

All five starters scored in double figures for the Panthers, led by Roegiers-Jensen's 26, who also dished out a game-high 11 assists for her third career double-double. Also in double figures was freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.), who nailed 6-of-8 from the floor and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range to finish with 16 points.

 

Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) totaled 15 points for the Panthers before fouling out with 5:39 on the clock. Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) recorded 15 points, seven assists, and six steals. Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) registered 11 and a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Trailing 25-23 with 6:53 remaining in the first half, Roegiers-Jensen, who scored 16 first-half points, connected on a 3-pointer to open a 22-9 run to end the period, giving the Panthers a 45-34 advantage at the intermission. State held the Tigers to two field goals over the final four minutes in staking its 11-point halftime margin.

 

The Panthers never trailed in the second period, despite a furious rally from the Tigers. Towson climbed back to within three, 54-51, in the first eight minutes of the stanza after a made jumper from Jamell Beasley. However, David responded with a trey on the ensuing possession to ignite State's offense and pushed the lead back to double digits, 72-60, with 6:54 remaining.

 

The Tigers, led by 17 second half points from Kelly Robinson, managed to get within six on two occasions late in the contest, but it wasn't enough to overcome a Panthers' team that shot 58 percent from the floor and totaled 28 assists on 32 field goals.

 

Towson forward Kandace Davis posted a career-high 16 points and finished with a game- and career-best 11 rebounds. Guard Shanae Baker-Brice corralled 13 points, six assists and six steals. Beasley and Alexis Freeman each finished with 11 for Towson. Robinson finished with 19.

 

Towson out rebounded Georgia State 40-35, including a 19-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The Panthers made 18-of-24 free throws and shot 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the final minute.

 

Georgia State makes a short trip up I-95 for a Sunday 1 p.m. showdown against CAA foe Delaware, which is receiving votes in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' polls.
