ATLANTA (Jan. 25, 2007) ? Georgia State rallied for a 71-70 lead with 1:19 remaining behind a layup from freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.), but William & Mary's Kyra Kaylor hit a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession and added two free throws with 30 seconds on the clock, to help lead the Tribe to a 77-76 victory over the Panthers in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Thursday evening at the Ga. State Sports Arena.
Georgia State drops its third straight at home and falls to 11-8 on the season (3-5 CAA), while William & Mary picks up its second consecutive victory and improves to 13-6 (5-3 CAA).
Panthers' senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished with a team-high 19 points. Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) totaled 18 and a game-high nine rebounds. McKeller finished with 10 and sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) chipped in 11.
Keylor led all scorers in tying her career-high with 30 points. Forward Devin James totaled a career-best 27 points, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range. The Tribe shot 53 percent (9-of-17) from 3-point range for the game, including 63 percent (5-of-8) in the second period..
The contest featured five ties and 17 lead changes. Georgia State trailed 39-38 at halftime. James, who scored 20 points in the second half, gave the Tribe a seven -point lead, 51-44, with 16:36 left to go in the second half.
Trailing 63-57 at the 8:27 mark, Roegiers-Jensen nailed a trey and added a layup roughly a minute later to spark the Panthers on an 11-0 run and their biggest lead of the second period, 68-63, with under five minutes remaining.
James' three at 3:26 cut the deficit to one, 69-68, and her jumper at 1:50 put the Tribe ahead 70-69. She added two free throws with six seconds on the clock to extend the Tribe to lead four, 77-73. Georgia State fought valiantly in the final minute. Freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) made two free throws and Hollins' 3-pointer at the buzzer resulted in the final score.
Both teams connected well from the floor as the Panthers shot 45 percent and the Tribe was 48 percent. Georgia State out rebounded William & Mary 42-35.
Georgia State hosts Drexel Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ga. State Sports Arena.
