ATLANTA (Jan. 21, 2007) ? Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) nailed a 3-pointer for Georgia State with 12 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Panthers were out scored 13-2 in the extra frame, giving Virginia Commonwealth a 75-64 road win in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena.
Roegiers-Jensen totaled a career-high 32 points to lead all scorers. The contest marked the second straight overtime game at the Sports Arena between Georgia State (11-7, 3-4 CAA) and VCU (10-7, 3-4 CAA). It was also the first time in school history the Panthers' have recorded back-to-back overtime games in a single season. Sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) registered 16 points before fouling out with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) tallied a game-high 11 boards.
Krystal Vaughn scored 16 points to lead four Va. Commonwealth players in double figures. The Rams, who win on the road for the first time in CAA action this season (1-3), also had double-digit efforts from Quanitra Hollingsworth (13 pts, team-high 10 rebounds), Michele Cosel (14 pts) and LaKea Jones (13 pts).
The Panthers finished 0-6 from the floor in the overtime period, while VCU shot 4-of7, including a 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line. After a layup from Vaughn in the extra period gave VCU a 2-point lead, 64-62, Roegiers-Jensen tied the contest with two straight free throws. The Rams then out scored State 11-0 over the next 4:25, including a trey from Cosel, to pull away for the win.
Georgia State, which led 20-13 with 10:49 on the clock in the first period, saw its advantage evaporate after the Rams closed the stanza on a 17-6 run to stake a 30-26 halftime advantage.
The Panthers went up by five in the second period, 44-39, following a trey from Roegiers-Jensen with 11:13 remaining. But, another 17-6 Rams' spurt, capped by a 3-pointer from Cosel, gave VCU a 56-50 advantage with 5:09 left. Leading 62-59, Cosel made the second of two free throws with 20 seconds on the clock, leading to Roegiers-Jensen's game-tying three in regulation.
Georgia State shot 39 percent from the floor and allowed Va. Commonwealth to connect on 44 percent of its field goals. State out rebounded VCU, 43-38, but the Rams went 15-of-23 (65 percent) from the free throw line, compared to only 7-of-13 (54 percent) for the Panthers. VCU also scored 24 points off 26 Georgia State turnovers and totaled a 20-8 advantage on second chance points.
Georgia State hosts William & Mary Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Ga. State Sports Arena.
