WILMINGTON, N.C. (Jan. 18, 2007) ? Leading 75-74 in double overtime, sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) stole the ball and raced down the court for a layup with two minutes left, and junior center Vatai Smith (Greensboro, N.C.) added a free throw with 10 seconds remaining to lift Georgia State to a 78-76 victory over UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Thursday evening at Trask Coliseum.
Georgia State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) tied her career-high with 30 points to lead all scorers. Hollins finished with 12 and freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) poured in 10 points in the second half. Junior guard Keisha Monroe (Spring Lake, N.C.) tallied 10 points off the bench for the Panthers (11-6, 3-3 CAA) who win their second straight and back-to-back CAA games on the road for the first time since joining the league in 2005-06. Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) led Georgia State with a career-high 13 boards.
“This is a great win for our team,” exclaimed jubilant Georgia State head coach Lea Henry. “Our team kept battling and battling even though we didn't play particularly well. This is a great win for a young team. We found a way to win and it is experiences like this, on the road, that really help to build the character of a team.”
Lori Drake paced the Seahawks (5-11, 1-4 CAA), who have dropped three straight, with 24 points and posted a game-high 18 rebounds. Sahsha Taylor (16 pts, 16 rebs) and Alex Stewart (12 pts, 11 rebs) also contributed. Denise Lawrence added 13 points for UNCW.
Georgia State returns home on Sunday to face Va. Commonwealth at 2 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
