NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 11, 2007) ? Senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led all scorers with 19 points as Georgia State dropped a 75-54 decision at Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Constant Center.
Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) chipped in 14 and added four steals for the Panthers (9-6, 1-3 CAA) who have lost two straight. Forward Sherida Triggs led the Lady Monarchs (7-7, 3-0 CAA), winners of four consecutive contests, with 16 points. Forward Shahida Williams tossed in 15 and Tish Lyons came off the bench to score 10.
Hollins gave Georgia State an early 2-0 lead to start the game. Williams evened things up at 2-all after a layup, sparking a 10-0 run for the Lady Monarchs. A Roegiers-Jensen free throw brought the Panthers to within six, 13-7, with 12:11 remaining in the first half. However, State made only four field goals for the remainder of the period en route to a 34-16 halftime deficit.
The Panthers shot 23 percent in the first period and allowed the Lady Monarchs to score 21 points off miscues. Old Dominion out rebounded State, 34-18, at the break, including 18 from the offensive glass. ODU also totaled 13 second chance points.
The second half proved to be a different story as Georgia State responded with improved passing and better shooting to total 38 points compared to ODU's 41 in the stanza.
Leading by 18 to start the second period, the Lady Monarchs increased their margin to 25, 67-42, following a made three-pointer from guard TJ Jordan at 6:38. Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) recorded a 3-point play in response to Jordan's trifecta, igniting a 12-4 run by the Panthers to move to within 17, 71-54, with just over two minutes left. ODU made four straight free throws at the end of the contest for the final margin.
Georgia State shot 15-of-26 in the second half for 58 percent and finished the game shooting 39 percent from the floor. Old Dominion connected on 42 percent of its field goals and out rebounded the Panthers, 47-31. The Lady Monarchs scored 31 points off 25 Georgia State turnovers.
Georgia State looks to break its two-game skid when the Panthers visit George Mason Sunday at 2 p.m.
