TOWSON, Md. – The Georgia State University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson University Friday afternoon, despite a strong defensive presence throughout the game.
Towson (5-4-1, 1-2) scored the winning goal when a deep cross by senior defender Tiffany Wilson caught the Panther's defense off guard. Tiger forward Erica Marshall snapped the ball in net with a header from 10 yards out.
“It was a disappointing way to lose,” said Georgia State head coach
Domenic Martelli. “At times the entire team played well and the game was in our style, but poor decisions, mainly bas passes that ended possessions, gave Towson opportunities.”
Georgia State (3-6-3, 0-2-1) played well in the first period, but poor decisions in the second half allowed Towson to gain confidence as they pressured State's goal with 10 shots.
“We played poor soccer for 35 minutes. We lost momentum we needed to come forward with a win,” said Martelli. “We played better in overtime, but they came out on top.”
The Panthers attempted 17 shots in the game to Towson's 21, but took three more corner kicks than the Tigers, with nine corners to six.
The Panthers were led offensively by sophomore forward
Kay Harbrueger, who recorded four shots. Junior forward
Tenisha Cohen took three shots and three Georgia State players took two apiece.
The Panthers return to action Sunday, October 1, when they play CAA foe George Mason in Fairfax, Va. at 1 p.m.
