Senior Christen Garcia had 15 digs and junior Amy Lusk had 16 kills and 10 digs, but the Georgia State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (30-25, 30-28, 30-20) to Winthrop Saturday afternoon in the fourth match of the McAlister's Deli/Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington.
Georgia State was unable to follow up on their first two-match win streak of the season, falling to a Winthrop team that has just one loss in 16 matches. State had 34 kills to Winthrop's 45, though the Panthers outblocked Winthrop 6.0-5.0, and also outdug the Eagles 45-38.
Game two was perhaps the key game of the match. The Panthers led 16-10 before a 7-0 run gave Winthrop a 17-16 advantage. The game would stay close through to the end, with neither team getting a lead bigger than two. The last lead for the Panthers came at 26-25 off a Lusk kill, and while the score would be tied three more times before the end of the game, Winthrop would get the last two points out of a 28-28 tie to take the second game 30-28.
The Panthers now sit 1-1 on the tournament, but will try to leave Wilmington with a winning record when they face Gardner-Webb this afternoon at approximately 5:00 p.m.
