Gamecocks match Panthers to 0-0 Tie in Overtime

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? The Georgia State Panthers were unable to close scoring opportunities against the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State and were held to a tie, 0-0, in double overtime Tuesday night in Jacksonville, Ala.

Georgia State (3-4-2) dominated Jacksonville State (1-7-1) in most every statistical category ? 28 shots to eight, 12 shots on goal to five, 12 corner kicks to two and 15 fouls to six, highlighting the Panthers aggressive play ? yet were unable to finish a scoring opportunity for the win.

After the disappointing tie, Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli had few comments; “We need to play a lot better in our 11 conference games.”

Sophomore defender Candace Gonzales led the Panthers with five shots, with two on goal. Junior defender Paige Beyer, senior forward Lauren Chavez and sophomore midfielder Caroline Harvischak each recorded three shots on goal, while four Panthers took two shots apiece and four others recorded one shot.

Of positive note, the Panther defense and goalies Charlotte Vargo and Megan Macdonald recorded there fourth shut out of the year as the goalies split time in net for the seventh consecutive game, with Vargo starting and Macdonald cleaning up. The Panthers' defense did not allow a shot in the first period, while Macdonald recorded four saves in the second period and one in overtime.

The Panthers open home play on Friday, Sept. 22 with their first Colonial Athletic Association match against James Madison at 4 p.m.
