SIMPSONVILLE, KY (Sep. 18, 2006) -- The Georgia State women's golf team entered the 2006 Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup as the defending champs. After 36-holes on Day 1, the Panthers find themselves in fifth place at 35-over, 24 shots out of first place leader Louisville at 11-over.
"This is an improvement from where we finished in our last tournament," said head coach Cathy Mant. "The course is long and there are a few holes where you can make some big numbers on them. We have to continue to focus on course management to avoid those big numbers."
Junior Joanna Klatten led the Panthers in both rounds on Monday. Klatten finished 1-over and 3-over for her two rounds, good enough for an eighth-place tie at 4-over on the individual board. Freshman Cathrine Madsen stepped up her play in her second collegiate tournament. Madsen finished 4-over and 6-over for her two rounds putting her in tied for 24th-place at 10-over. Senior Pam Torres shot 7-over and 5-over for the day finishing at 12-over for the tournament. Sophomore Claire Starkie is one shot behind Torres with rounds of 7-over and 6-over. Sophomore Karin Dedering had a great first round at 3-over but suffered through a tough second round finishing 15-over and 18-over for the tournament.
