Georgia State shut out by 26th ranked Bulldogs

ATHENS, Ga. ? The Georgia State University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the University of Georgia, who is currently ranked 26th in the nation by Soccerbuzz.com, on Sunday evening in Athens after allowing goals at the beginning and end of competition.

”I thought defensively we did what we had to do, but we didn't do enough good things up front to keep us going,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “We did enough to create a couple of chances that would normally keep you in a 1-0 game, but to give up another goal was tough.”

The Panthers (3-4-1) found themselves down from the beginning after allowing a goal to the Bulldogs (5-2) in the first minute when senior midfielder Randi-Lynn Bruso headed the ball into net, assisted by Catherine Bruce and Megan Tomlinson.

That goal would be all the Bulldogs would need.

Georgia State tried to match Georgia's opening mark throughout the first half, but were slowed by the Bulldogs' smothering defense, which allowed only three first-half shots and only one on goal.

The Bulldogs recorded nine shots in the first half, with three shots on goal.

The Panthers fight to score continued in the second half, but struggled to find a rhythm against Georgia's defenders.

The Panthers attempted only two shots in the second half.

Georgia pushed the lead to two late when junior midfielder Joni Vickers scored in the 85th minute.

The Panthers had one last opportunity to score when senior forward Lauren Chavez broke free to shoot in the 86th minute, only to have her shot bounce helplessly off the crossbar.

”This was the best team we've played to date and may be the best team we play all year, but we still have to play better no matter who the opponent is,” said Martelli. “It was a good effort by the backs and midfielders, but we couldn't get quite enough going out there.”

Georgia State recorded five shots in the contest, while Georgia recorded 19.

Panther goalkeeper Charlotte Vargo started the game in net and recorded one save and junior goalkeeper Megan Macdonald played the second half and recorded four saves.

Georgia State next plays on the road at Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala. on Tuesday, Sept 19 at 7 p.m., before beginning Colonial Athletic Association play at home on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
