MACON, Ga. – The Panthers recorded their victory of the season with a 1-0 triumph over Tennessee Tech in overtime at the Mercer LQ Cup in Macon, Ga. Junior forward Nathalie Carter produced the game-winning goal in the 97th minute off an assist from senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers, striking the ball into the left upper 90 just beyond the goalkeeper's outstretched hands.

“It was a great way to get your first win,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “We had scoring opportunities early, but failed to produce and as the game wore on both teams became tired and sloppy. But, Nathalie took a great pass from Amber in overtime and claimed the game. It's great to be in the win column.”

Georgia State (1-1-1) had ample scoring opportunities in the first have, but struggled to find net. The Panthers took 13 shots and four corner kicks, yielding six great scoring opportunities. But, three shots sailed wide, two were stuffed by Tennessee Tech's goalkeeper and one shot bounced feebly from the cross bar to be cleared.

The pace slowed for Georgia State in the second half and the Panthers recorded only six shots, but, meanwhile, Tennessee Tech (0-3) began to show life and took nine shots, more than quadrupling their first half output. But, Georgia State's defenders – including junior captain Christa Mann, Kristen McKillop, Rebeccah Bernard, Rosie O'Toole, Candace Gonzales, Kari Quinn and Tiffany Blackmon – prevented any dangerous shots on goal and helped preserve the shutout into overtime.

Carter and Quinn led the Panthers with four shots apiece and Paige Beyer, Kay Harbrueger and Collins-Cephers each recorded two shots. Goalkeepers Charlotte Vargo and Megan Macdonald split time in the shutout and Macdonald recorded six saves in her first action of the year.

Georgia State returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 3:30 p.m. vs. Mercer for final round action of the Mercer LQ Cup.
