ATLANTA (Dec. 9, 2006) – Every Georgia State women's basketball player scored a field goal in the Panthers' 90-46 victory over visiting Savannah State (4-3) Saturday afternoon at the Georgia State Sports Arena. Sophomore guard Brittany Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) totaled a game- and career-best 22 points to lead Georgia State (4-4), which has won four of its last five games.
Georgia State has scored 90 or more points in a game twice this season, including its 91-70 victory at Norfolk State on Nov. 21. The last time the Panthers scored 90 or more twice during the season was back during the 2000-01 campaign. The last time the Panthers totaled 90 or more points at home was against Jacksonville State (91-70) on Feb. 22, 2003.
Junior center Vatai Smith (Greensboro, N.C.) came off the bench to record 13 points and eight rebounds for Georgia State. Freshman guard Tabitha David (Mableton, Ga.) continued her hot pace since being inserted into the starting lineup as she finished with 12 points -- all of which came in the second half. Senior Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) nearly collected her first career triple-double after registering eight points, eight rebounds and a game-and career-high 10 assists.
"This win was a total team effort," expressed Georgia State head coach Lea Henry, who is now one win shy of 200 victories in 13 seasons at Georgia State. "We executed well offensively; we were able to get out on the break and score points; we played solid defense and we made shots. You never know how your team is going to respond after having so many days off between games, but we managed to put everything together for today's game right from the start."
Georgia State jumped out to a 19-4 lead with 11:28 left in the first half after a layup from sophomore center Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.). The lead would never fall to single digits for the remainder of the contest as the Panthers commanded a 43-24 advantage at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second period, as Georgia State out scored Savannah State 47-22 in the period. Leading 52-35 with 14:27 remaining, the Panthers went on a 16-1 run, capped by two Roegiers-Jensen's free throws, to go ahead 68-36 with 8:20 left in the game. Georgia State would post its largest margin of the afternoon when the final buzzer sounded.
Georgia State shot 48 percent from the floor and held Savannah State to 23 percent. The Panthers out rebounded the Tigers, 62-34, as four players tied for game-high honors with eight, including Head, Hollins, Roegiers-Jensen and Smith.
Georgia State takes a week off for final exams before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 18 when the Panthers head to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the UCF Holiday Classic, hosted by Central Florida. State will face Florida A&M at 5 p.m. on Dec. 18 and North Florida at 5 p.m. on Dec. 19.
