“We put ourselves into foul trouble late in the first half and into the second period,” stated head coach Lea Henry, who is three wins shy of 200 victories at Georgia State (197-155). “But, our freshmen are really beginning to contribute well for us and helped with this victory. They believe in themselves and in each other when they are out there on the court, and it is paying dividends for us. However, we still need to limit our mistakes, including turnovers and making fouls. We are still progressing to where we need to be, and I am confident we are going to get there.”
Georgia State shot 48 percent for the game, including 54 percent in the second period. The Panthers out rebounded the Gamecocks, 45-34, and dished out 20 assists while making 12 steals. Jacksonville State connected at 42 percent. The game was tied, 35-all at halftime.
Georgia State completes its five-game road swing to start the regular season. The Panthers' home opener will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena against Samford.
Fans are encouraged to be in attendance early Tuesday as Georgia State will honor former players Patechia Hartman (jersey honored) and Monica Thomas (career 3-point leader) as well as current player Vatai Smith (single-season blocked shot record) prior to the start of the game.
