HAMPTON, Va. ? Georgia State senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led all scorers with 19 points as Georgia State dropped its third straight contest to begin the 2006-07 season, losing 62-55 at host Hampton Sunday evening at the Hampton Convocation Center.
Hampton (2-1), winners of two straight, scored the final eight points of the contest. Georgia State (0-3) rebounded from an 11-point deficit (52-41) with 6:12 remaining to take a one-point lead, 55-54, with 2:31 on the clock as Roegiers-Jensen totaled 10 points during the 14-2 run. However, the Pirates' Ashlee Finley, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, posted seven of Hampton's final eight points, going 5-for-5 from the free throw line, to seal the win.
Georgia State freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) totaled the first double-double of her career, notching 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Roegiers-Jensen added a game-best seven assists, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Hampton's Artavia Burns collected 10 points, five rebounds and six steals. Guard Rachel Butler contributed 14 points, five rebounds and seven steals.
The Panthers and Pirates battled to 13 ties and seven lead changes. State trailed by four at halftime, 28-24, and opened the second period with consecutive field goals in the paint to tie the contest. Even at 41-all (the fifth tie of the period) with 10:25 remaining in the game, the Panthers committed five straight turnovers on their next five possessions that led to 11 consecutive points for the Pirates who took a 52-41 advantage with 6:12 left in the contest.
State managed to tie the contest for the sixth time in the stanza, 55-all with 1:54 remaining, following Roegiers-Jensen's scoring burst. Well into the bonus, a Panther foul led to Finley making two free throws and State couldn't keep up on the offensive end to stay in the game.
The Pirates' out rebounded the Panthers, 53-40, including 29 from the offensive glass. Hampton made more free throws (25-of-36) than field goals (17-of-66) in the contest and forced 29 Georgia State turnovers while grabbing 21 steals.
Georgia State was 24-of-57 from the floor for 42 percent, but made only 1-of-9 from 3-point range. The Panthers were 6-of-12 from the free throw line.
Georgia State is in the midst of a five-game road swing to begin the 2006-07 season. The Panthers continue their trek with a road appearance at Norfolk State Tuesday at 7 p.m. before heading into its Thanksgiving break.
