Shooting Woes Hurt Panthers Against Tech

ATLANTA  ? Guards Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Brittany Hollins (So., Columbia, Md.) combined to go 3-for-26 (8.0 percent) from the floor and Georgia State made only 25 percent of its shots as a team as the Panthers fell to cross-town rival Georgia Tech, 83-41, in women's basketball action Thursday evening at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. With the loss, Georgia State falls to 0-2 on the young season, while Tech remains undefeated at 3-0.

Freshman forward Danyiell McKeller (Fayetteville, N.C.) led Georgia State with a team-high 16 points. Freshman forward RaShay Rawls (Augusta, Ga.) totaled a team-high 11 rebounds and added eight points for the Panthers. Hollins posted five points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Roegiers-Jensen finished with three points and three rebounds.

Georgia Tech guard Stephanie Higgs led all scorers with 28 points. Forward Janie Mitchell collected a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Tech, which led the entire game, scored the first seven points of the contest and took an early 9-2 advantage with 16:20 remaining in the first half after a layup from Mitchell. Following a layup from McKeller at 13:46 to make the score 11-6 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, Tech went on a 13-0 run, capped by a Higgs' 3-pointer to push the margin to 24-6 at the 7:04 mark. The lead grew to 47-16 at halftime as State shot 21 percent (7-for-34) in the period, including 0-for-7 from 3-point range.

The Panthers' poor shooting improved slightly in the second frame, moving to 29 percent (9-for-31), but it wasn't enough as Tech out scored the Panthers' 36-25 in the period, shooting 42 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets finished the game making 44 percent from the field, including 33 percent from beyond the arc.

Georgia State never found its rhythm offensively on the night, connecting on only 2-of-18 (11 percent) three-pointers and going 7-for-16 (44 percent) from the free throw line. State had eight assists compared to 26 turnovers -- which led to 30 Georgia Tech points -- and was out rebounded 54-40 in the contest.

Georgia State is in the midst of a five-game road swing to begin the 2006-07 season. The Panthers continue their trek with road appearances at Hampton Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. and at Norfolk State Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
