Tourney Hopes Erode with Loss to ODU, 1-0

NORFOLK, Va. – The Georgia State University women's soccer team was defeated by Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Virginia, ending the team's hopes of making the CAA Championship Tournament.

Sophomore forward Janna Pearson scored the game-winning goal for the Monarchs in the 70th minute when she struck the ball in net from five-yards out off a Katie Watson pass.

“It's unfortunate to lose, because we knew we needed to perform well these last weeks against the top teams in the conference to get in to the conference tournament,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “It was a great effort by everyone and we had the chances on goal, but they're a good team with 15 wins. They know how to win and they came on hard in the second half.”

Georgia State (5-11-3, 2-7-1) controlled most of the first period and held an 11 to seven shot advantage over Old Dominion; The Panthers also held a significant advantage in corner kicks in the first half, with three to none for the Monarchs.

Old Dominion (15-3, 7-3) had a notable opportunity to score in the first period, but Georgia State's sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Vargo rushed a charging forward to stuff the opportunity. She recorded one save in the period.

Old Dominion came out of the half a more focused team and began to better assert themselves offensively in second period. The Monarchs out shot the Panthers 13 to seven in the period and had four corner kicks to Georgia State's one.

Junior goalie Megan Macdonald started the second half for Georgia State and had an outstanding save in a one-on-one opportunity to match Vargo's impressive stop. Macdonald recorded four saves in the period.

Georgia State was not without scoring opportunities in the match.

In the first half, senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers fought for a header in front of the Monarch goal, but had her scoring opportunity bounce off the cross bar.
Later, the Panthers netted a ball for a 1-0 advantage, but the goal was called back on a foul for bumping Old Dominion goalie Lauren Tupman after she fell backwards on the shot. According to coach Martelli, the official's judgment was in error because no Panther made contact with the goalkeeper.

The Panthers were led offensively Candace Gonzales and Nathalie Carter, who each took three shots. In addition, four Panthers took two shots in the contest.

Georgia State returns to action on Saturday, October 28, which is Senior Day for the Panthers, as they play host to CAA foe UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m.
