ATLANTA ? The Georgia State University women's soccer team relied on lucky number 13 to defeat Drexel at home, 2-0.
On Friday the 13th, number 13, senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. The goal was her second on the season and gave Georgia State (4-9-3, 1-5-1) its first Colonial Athletic Association victory on the season
Sophomore forward Kay Harbrueger added an insurance mark with three minutes remaining from 20-yards out. Senior forward Tenisha Cohen assisted the goal.
“The effort all year translated to today's result,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “It was a well earned and well deserved victory by our girls.”
Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the opening minutes of the first half, but the Panthers began to collect their game and out shot their opponent 7-4 in the period.
Cohen had the best scoring opportunity of the first half when she broke free of two defenders right of the goal, but her shot sailed into the arms of Drexel goalkeeper Erica Lippitt.
The Panthers opened the second half with a surge of offensive pressure that was never matched by Drexel, as the Panthers had 11 unanswered shots on goal in the period.
“We controlled what we wanted in the second half. We played our style,” said Martelli.
The Panthers out shot the Dragons 18 to four in the contest and had six more corner kicks, with seven to one.
Panther goalkeeper Charlotte Vargo recorded three saves in the first half and Megan Macdonald, who started the second period, recorded no saves, as there was no shots recorded by the Dragons in the second half.
Georgia State was led offensively by Harbrueger who recorded six shots, and Collins-Cephers and Cohen each had three.
Drexel, who fell to 4-9-1 and 1-6 in the CAA, was led by Stacey Blevins who recorded two shots in then first half.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, October 15 when they play Delaware at 1 p.m.
