Panthers fall to Patriot offensive surge

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Georgia State University women's soccer fell victim to an offensive explosion as the George Mason Patriots scored four goals in the second half Sunday to win, 4-2, ending the Patriot's six-match losing skid.

After a scoreless first half, George Mason (4-7-1, 1-3-0) jumped to a 2-0 advantage when L.J. Williams scored her third and fourth goals of the season. Williams first scored in the 51st minute when she kicked the ball into the upper left corner from the middle of the box unassisted. Nilani Duarte led Williams to her second goal with a splitting through pass that was put in net from 15 yards out in the 64th minute.

Georgia State (3-7-3, 0-3-1) responded when freshman defender Caitlin Smith served a free kick into the goalkeeper's box that was placed in net by sophomore defender Candace Gonzales in the 75th minute for her first goal of the season.

The Patriots pushed the advantage back to two four minutes later when Leslie Cabe fired low into the middle of the net off a Sarah Fack cross. Williams increased the lead to three when she placed the ball in net from six yards out in the 84th minute. Rachel Wiggins assisted the goal with a short pass from the goal line.

Sophomore forward Kay Harbrueger scored late for the Panthers, when she received a pass from senior forward Lauren Chavez, dribbled to the top of the box and fired from 18 yards out in the 88th minute.

“One the road in this conference you don't get any breaks and when things aren't going your way it can be very tough,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “We were being physically out played today, but I felt we could get back in it and we had a ton of forwards in the game, but it was tough to see them score the third goal to break the lead to two again. That hurt us”

Despite being out shot, 27-7, the Panthers played an aggressive game, earning three corner kicks to Mason's two and drawing two yellow cards, one on senior midfielder Amber Collins-Cephers in the 53rd minute, the other for Chavez in the 71st minute.

Georgia State was led offensively by Harbrueger, who took three shots and scored once, and Gonzales who scored on her only shot. Collins-Cephers took two shots in the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Charlotte Vargo played recorded nine saves in the loss.

Georgia State returns to action when they travel to Hofstra on Friday, October 6, for their fifth CAA contest at 7 p.m.
