Atlanta, Ga. – Head Georgia State baseball coach Michael Hurst can say he has hired Greg Frady as his new assistant head baseball coach and gained “a world of experience” and really mean it.
Frady will come to Georgia State after coaching the German National Team in this summer's European Championships. That team's next goal would be to try to qualify for the 2008 Olympics. That duty is after 17 years of collegiate baseball coaching that includes three NCAA postseason teams, two Division II World Series teams, and a top ten Florida junior college team.
The European Championships take place in August after which time Frady will report to the downtown Atlanta campus to begin his duties full-time for Georgia State.
The native of Ellijay, Ga., returns to his home state after being the assistant head coach at the University of Central Florida (in the Atlantic Sun Conference) from 1996-2003. There, he was part of three NCAA Tournament teams with three tournament championships and three regular season championships. The Golden Knights won 280 games in the seven seasons, topped by the 51-14 team of 2001, and were ranked in the Top 25 polls each year. Frady recruited and coached 18 Division I All-Americans and had 61 players drafted and signed into professional baseball.
Prior to UCF, Frady was head coach at North Florida Community College for six seasons where he amassed a 187-128 record and broke the school record for wins in a season three times as they ranked in the top state in the state.
His first coaching stint came at Columbus (Ga.) State as an assistant coach from 1988-90. Frady helped lead the Cougars to the NCAA Division II College World Series berth. Frady earned his master's degree at Columbus State.
As a collegiate player, Frady played at Troy State, another current A-Sun member like Georgia State. He was a part of the Division II 1986 national championship team as a senior shortstop and pitcher and earned a return trip to the College World Series as a trip as a junior. Frady was offered the opportunity to play in the Houston Astros organization, but opted to begin his coaching career instead.
In high school at Gilmer in northwest Georgia, Frady was the most valuable player of both the baseball and basketball teams, while he also played football and wrestled.
"We are fortunate to get a man of Frady's quality and experience," head coach Hurst said. "While I will miss Dave Hartley after 13 years, I have known Greg Frady for a long time and know he will really add to our program here at Georgia State. As a native Georgian, I think Greg is really looking forward to being back in this area. And we are looking forward to having him on our team."
Greg and his wife, Rhonda, have been married 16 years and have two children, Bailey and Riley.
