Former Major League pitcher Chad Bell was been named the pitching coach for Georgia State baseball in July 2022.
Bell played 10 seasons of professional baseball, reaching the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers in 2017-18.
"Chad Bell brings a wealth of experience and knowledge as a former Major Leaguer who spent a decade in pro ball," GSU head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "He was a three-time draft pick who experienced success at all levels of amateur and professional baseball.
"Chad will help us take this program forward as we strive toward our goals of winning the Sun Belt and reaching the NCAA Regionals and beyond."
The Knoxville, Tenn., native was originally drafted in 2007 in the 25th round by the Milwaukee Brewers out of South Doyle High School but elected to play college baseball at Walters State Community College, where he was an All-American and two-time conference pitcher of the year.
After his freshman season at Walters State, Bell was drafted in the 37th round by the Cleveland Indians but returned to school. He was drafted for the third time in 2009, going in the 14th round to the Texas Rangers, and following a standout summer in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League that included a nine-inning no-hitter for the Cotuit Kettleers, he signed his first professional contract and joined the Rangers organization.
After recovering from Tommy John surgery, Bell was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2016, and in 2017 he was called up by the Tigers. He made his big league debut on May 10, 2017 against the Arizona Diamondbacks and made 31 appearances for the Tigers in 2017-18.
Bell went on to play in the Atlanta Braves organization in 2018 before two seasons (2019-20) in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Hanwha Eagles.
He is currently completing his bachelor's degree in business administration. He and his wife Allison have three children: Paxton, Avery and Hudson.
