HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Georgia State volleyball (6-8, 0-0 SBC) posted double-doubles from Sophia Johnson and Akira Burt, but couldn't finish off a fifth-set rally, falling 3-2 to Marshall on Friday at Cam Henderson Center.
Johnson and Burt each turned in double-doubles, with Johnson posting a match-high 20 kills and 26 digs and Burt adding 18 kills and 15 digs. Mina Olgar chipped in 11 kills to give the Panthers three attackers in double figures. On the defensive end, Sigrun Jonsdottir added 13 digs to help Georgia State put three players in double figures there as well, while Olgar led the way up front with eight blocks.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Georgia State built a lead as large as five points, but Marshall wiped it out down the stretch, seizing the lead for good at 19-18 and closing out a 25-20 win in a set that featured seven ties.
SET 2 | Marshall took control early and pulled away for good at 5-4, stretching the margin to as many as 10 points on the way to a 25-16 win that put the Panthers in an early 2-0 hole.
SET 3 | Georgia State survived the closest set of the match, winning 25-23 in a stanza that included 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Panthers jumped out to a 7-2 lead, watched Marshall answer with a run of its own to go up 15-11, then closed the set on top to cut the deficit to 2-1.
SET 4 | Georgia State evened the match by leading from start to finish, building an advantage as large as five points and winning 25-22 without ever trailing.
SET 5 | Marshall grabbed the lead on the first point, building a cushion as large as eight points before closing out a 15-10 win to take the match.
