LAFAYETTE, La. – Georgia State dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Louisiana, falling 14-1 in the opener before dropping a 5-1 decision in game two at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The Panthers move to 22-24 overall and 10-13 in Sun Belt play. Louisiana improves to 29-18 overall and 11-12 in conference action.
Game One: Louisiana 14, Georgia State 1
Louisiana took control early in the first game, scoring three runs in the second inning before breaking the game open with a seven-run third. The Ragin' Cajuns added three more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to build a 14-0 lead.
Georgia State was held scoreless through the first six innings before Wesley Bass put the Panthers on the board in the seventh with a solo home run to left field. The homer was Bass' second of the season.
The Panthers finished with five hits in the opener. Wills Maginnis, Cole Griffith, Bass, Austin Killingsworth and Sam Silas each recorded a hit.
Brian Crooms took the loss for Georgia State, while William Petteys, Joshua Evans and Montrell Christian Jr. also worked out of the bullpen.
Game Two: Louisiana 5, Georgia State 1
The second game was tighter through the early innings, but Louisiana used a strong pitching effort and late insurance runs to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Michael Caruso kept the Panthers in the game, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings while striking out three. Louisiana scored both early runs in the third inning, using a double and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
Georgia State broke through in the eighth inning. Austin Killingsworth drew a walk and moved to third on a single by Adam Haber before Sam Silas drove him in with an RBI groundout.
The Panthers were limited to two hits in game two, with Hunter Carlson and Haber recording the hits.
Georgia State will close the series Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
