Panthers Split Day One at Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Georgia State Panthers (13-9, 0-0 SBC) split a pair of games on the opening day of the Winthrop Invitational on Friday, defeating East Tennessee State 6-4 before falling 1-0 to host Winthrop.

Georgia State was powered by strong pitching in the opener behind Briana Bower's 11-strikeout performance, while the Panthers were held scoreless in a tight pitchers' duel in game two despite a solid outing from Makayla Stephens.

GAME 1: GEORGIA STATE 6, ETSU 4
Briana Bower delivered a dominant performance in the circle, striking out 11 over seven innings to lead Georgia State to a 6-4 victory over East Tennessee State.

Bower allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking two to secure the complete-game win for the Panthers.

At the plate, Georgia State's offense was led by Morgan Willingham, who went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Zoey Defoor also recorded three hits, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while junior Ciarra Jefferson added a solo home run.

ETSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Panthers responded in the second inning when Jefferson launched a solo home run to cut the deficit in half.

Georgia State tied the game in the third on an RBI single from Maya Bagsby before taking control in the fifth inning. Willingham delivered a run-scoring single to highlight a two-run frame that gave the Panthers a 4-2 advantage.

The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth inning, again sparked by Willingham's RBI single, extending the lead to 6-2. ETSU pushed across two late runs, but Georgia State held on to secure the win.

GAME 1 NOTES

» Georgia State recorded 12 hits compared to ETSU's seven.
» The Panthers went 4-for-8 (.500) with runners in scoring position.

GAME 2: WINTHROP 1, GEORGIA STATE 0
Georgia State was unable to generate offense in the second game of the day, falling 1-0 to Winthrop despite a strong outing from Makayla Stephens.

Stephens worked six innings in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six and issuing one walk.

The Panthers struggled to advance runners, failing to move a runner past second base and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Their best scoring opportunity came in the fifth inning when senior Payton O'Connor reached second with nobody out.

Winthrop scored the game's lone run and held Georgia State off the scoreboard behind a complete-game shutout from the Eagles.
