Panthers Sweep Day Two of Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Georgia State Panthers (15-9, 0-0 SBC) turned in a dominant performance on Saturday at the Winthrop Invitational, defeating Winthrop 12-0 before earning a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Bucknell at Terry Field.

Makayla Stephens headlined the day with a one-hit shutout in game one and returned in game two to close out the Panthers' extra-inning win with a perfect inning in relief.

GAME 1: GEORGIA STATE 12, WINTHROP 0
Makayla Stephens delivered a complete-game one-hit shutout to lead Georgia State to a 12-0 run-rule victory over Winthrop.

Stephens allowed just one hit and one walk across five innings while striking out eight Eagles. She faced only 18 batters and threw 65 pitches in the dominant outing.

The Panthers' offense erupted for 12 runs on 12 hits, with every starter reaching base safely. Morgan Willingham led the charge, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. McKenzie Walker added a solo home run while scoring three runs, and Maia Mumpfield finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Georgia State jumped ahead early in the first inning when Mumpfield drove in Walker with a double to left center. Moments later, Jefferson swiped second base and Mumpfield scored on the throw to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Panthers broke the game open in the third inning. Chloe Hatcher singled to drive in Maya Bagsby before Payton O'Connor followed with a two-RBI single that scored Hatcher and Mumpfield to push the lead to 5-0.

Georgia State continued to build momentum in the fourth. Mumpfield lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Morgan Willingham, and Walker later scored on a Winthrop fielding error to make it 7-0.

The Panthers sealed the run-rule victory with a five-run fifth inning. Zoey Defoor started the rally with an RBI single before Willingham blasted a three-run home run to left center. Walker capped the scoring with a solo home run to right center to give Georgia State a 12-0 advantage.

Stephens closed the door in the bottom of the fifth, securing the shutout victory.

Georgia State battled through a tightly contested matchup in the nightcap, defeating Bucknell 3-2 in eight innings.

Briana Bower earned the win after pitching seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four. Stephens entered in the eighth inning and struck out the side on 12 pitches to record her first save of the season.

The Panthers totaled nine hits in the game, led by Maia Mumpfield and Chloe Hatcher, who each recorded two hits. Mumpfield drove in two runs, while Hatcher added a double and an RBI.

Georgia State struck first in the opening inning when Mumpfield lined an RBI single up the middle to score Maya Bagsby and give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.

Bucknell tied the game in the fourth inning on a wild pitch.

The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning. McKenzie Walker started on second and came around to score when Mumpfield delivered her second RBI single of the game through the left side to give Georgia State a 2-1 lead.

Moments later, Hatcher ripped an RBI double down the left-field line, advancing to third on the throw and scoring Mumpfield to extend the lead to 3-1.

Bucknell answered with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to one, but Stephens struck out the final three batters to secure the Panthers' victory.

GAME 2 NOTES
