ATLANTA, GA --Though they had plenty of opportunities, Georgia State had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 12 Panthers on base in a 7-4 setback at the hands of the Alabama State Hornets on Tuesday.
The Panthers move to 13-13 on the season, while Alabama State improves to 12-11.
Alabama State struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning on a three-run home run from Jackson Williams to take a 3-0 lead.
Georgia State answered in the bottom of the first. Wills Maginnis singled and Nick Garagozzo walked before John Beverley delivered a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Hornets added another run in the second inning and broke the game open in the sixth with a three-run frame, extending the lead to 7-2.
Georgia State attempted to chip away late. The Panthers scored in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Beverley and added another run in the ninth when Lucas Grantham delivered an RBI single.
Beverley led the Panthers offensively with three RBIs, while Grantham added a hit and an RBI. Wesley Bass recorded a hit and scored a run, and Garagozzo reached base three times with three walks.
On the mound, Jacob Crews (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in 1.1 innings. William Petteys provided 4.1 innings of relief, while Hunter Atkins added 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Georgia State will look to bounce back as it hosts Texas State for a three-game series starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.
