CHARLESTON, S.C. — Behind a dominant performance in the circle from Makayla Stephens, the Georgia State Panthers blanked the College of Charleston Cougars 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Stephens was in complete control all afternoon, tossing a four-hit shutout while striking out seven to earn her 10th win of the season.
At the plate, Maya Bagsby paced the Panthers with a 3-for-4 showing, including two doubles and two RBIs, while McKenzie Walker crossed the plate four times and added three hits of her own. Chloe Hatcher chipped in two RBIs, and Maia Mumpfield drove in two more to round out the scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia State wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Hatcher singled to third base to bring home Walker, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers added to the advantage in the third inning. Hatcher lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Walker, and Bagsby followed by stealing home later in the frame to make it 3-0.
Georgia State continued to apply pressure in the fifth. Bagsby roped an RBI double to score Walker, then Mumpfield drove in Bagsby with a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Panthers closed out the scoring in the seventh inning, plating two more runs. Bagsby doubled to left to bring home Walker, and Mumpfield followed with an RBI single to center to cap the 7-0 victory.
The Panthers held Charleston scoreless in every inning to secure the 7-0 shutout.
