Panthers Late Surge Falls Short to Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Georgia State Panthers staged a late comeback attempt that fell short 10-11 to the College of Charleston Cougars on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Patriots Point.

At the plate, Maia Mumpfield powered the offense with a 2-for-5 outing, including a double and four RBIs. Zoey Defoor set the table all afternoon, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk, while Maya Bagsby stayed hot with three hits, including a double and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were trailing 6-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Georgia State picked up three runs in the frame with Maia Mumpfield ripping a bases-clearing double to drive in three runs to cut the deficit to 3-6.

The Cougars expanded their lead to 7-3 in the third inning before the Panthers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. Lauren Brister came across to score the lone run of the inning for Georgia State, which brought the score to 7-4 in favor of the Cougars.

Charleston built their lead to 11-4 in the bottom of the fifth before the Georgia State reduced that that to 11-9 in the sixth. The Panthers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs off of eight hits, highlighted by Ciarra Jefferson stealing home.

Georgia State held the Cougars off the board before narrowing the gap further in the seventh. Zoey Defoor crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Panthers, tightening the Charleston lead. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short 10-11.
