HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Georgia State volleyball team (7-10, 1-4 SBC) topped Southern Miss (11-5, 2-3 SBC) 3-1 on Thursday night at the Southern Miss Wellness Center, with three Panthers posting double-doubles.
Akira Burt led the way with a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs, and Sophia Johnson added 12 kills and 10 digs. Annelore Engels completed the trio with a match-high 47 assists and a team-high 19 digs, plus a match-high eight blocks. As a team, Georgia State hit .244 and held Southern Miss to .142.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Panthers took the opener 25-20 in a set with 10 ties and four lead changes. Southern Miss led by as many as three, at 6-3, but Georgia State tied it at 6-6 and took the lead for good at 16-15 behind Akira Burt, who had seven kills in the set. Mina Olgar put away the final point, and the Panthers hit .293 while Southern Miss hit .140.
SET 2 | Southern Miss evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good at 5-4 and built a seven-point edge at 21-14. Georgia State closed on 22-20, but Southern Miss scored the final three points.
SET 3 | Georgia State answered with a 25-20 win to gain a 2-1 lead in the match. The set was tied nine times and was level at 19-19 before the Panthers went up 20-19 and closed on a 6-1 run, finishing with a kill from Manuela Altieri Liev. Southern Miss hit .085 in the set with eight errors.
SET 4 | The Panthers took the lead for good at 14-13 and closed out the match with a 25-20 win, their biggest lead coming on the final point. Georgia State hit .282 with 15 kills and only four errors, while Southern Miss hit .111. Sophia Johnson and Olgar combined on a block to end it.
