ATLANTA – Following a record-setting performance in Georgia State's 42-10 victory over Old Dominion, quarterback Cameran Brown and linebacker Xavier Esqillion earned Sun Belt Conference weekly honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Brown was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, while Esqillion earned un Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors after the duo helped lead the Panthers to a dominant conference victory.
Brown turned in a record-breaking night under center, completing 14-of-20 passes for a career-high 284 yards and a school-record six touchdown passes.
The senior signal caller's six touchdown passes broke the Georgia State single-game record and tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference record book. The six-touchdown performance also tied for second in the NCAA record book.
Brown provided one of the biggest plays of the night when he connected with DJ Avery for an 80-yard touchdown, marking the longest completion of Brown's career.
On the other side of the ball, Esqillion spearheaded a historic defensive performance as the Panthers held Old Dominion to just 146 total yards, the fewest allowed in a game in Georgia State program history.
Esqillion recorded a season-high five tackles, including four solo stops, while collecting three sacks for a loss of 10 yards and forcing two fumbles.
His three sacks matched the Georgia State single-game record, originally set in 2017. With seven sacks on the season, Esqillion also moved into a tie for No. 7 in the GSU single-season record book.
Esqillion's two forced fumbles marked just the third time in program history that a Panther has forced multiple fumbles in a single game.
Behind Esqillion's performance, the Georgia State defense piled up seven sacks, matching the program single-game record previously accomplished against ULM in 2017, South Alabama in 2020 and Southern Miss in 2022.
The Panthers also limited the Monarchs to just 11 first downs, matching the fewest allowed in program history. Georgia State previously held Old Dominion to 11 first downs in 2022.
Brown, Esqillion and the Panthers return to action at James Madison on Saturday, Oct. 17.
