NORFOLK, Va. — Crystal Henderson, Kaleigh Addie and Cheyenne Holloman combined for 52 of Georgia State's 68 points, but the Panthers came up short in a 73-68 road loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs (10-5, 2-1 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at Chartway Arena.
Georgia State (6-10, 1-3 SBC) placed three players in double figures, led by Henderson's 19 points and five assists. Addie followed with 18 points and two steals, while Holloman added 15 points and a team-high four steals.
Defensively, the Panthers were disruptive throughout the afternoon, forcing 20 Old Dominion turnovers while committing just 13 of their own. Georgia State capitalized on those miscues, converting them into 18 points, with Holloman setting the tone on the defensive end.
How It Happened
Georgia State opened the contest with energy, taking a 17-15 advantage into the second quarter. The Panthers set the tone defensively early, forcing six Old Dominion turnovers in the opening period and converting them into five points.
Old Dominion answered in the second, knotting the score at 24-24 before Georgia State responded with a 7-0 run beginning at the 6:01 mark. A basket from Cheyenne Holloman sparked the surge as the Panthers pushed ahead 31-24. The Monarchs, however, closed the half on a run of their own to pull even at 31-31 at the break. Georgia State leaned on its perimeter shooting in the quarter, knocking down three triples that accounted for nine of its 14 points.
The Monarchs gained momentum out of halftime, edging in front and sending Georgia State into the fourth quarter trailing 53-49. Despite the deficit, the Panthers stayed active on the glass, turning five offensive rebounds into five second-chance points while scoring 18 points in the period.
Old Dominion extended its lead early in the fourth, building a 58-51 cushion before Georgia State mounted another rally. The Panthers pieced together a 7-0 run to tie the game at 58 with 6:55 remaining, but could not complete the comeback. Old Dominion closed the game by outscoring Georgia State 15-10 down the stretch to secure the 73-68 decision. Georgia State continued to pressure defensively, capitalizing on five Monarch turnovers in the final quarter for six points.
