HUNTSVILLE, TX-The Georgia State volleyball team rallied after an early one-set deficit to secure a 3-1 victory (16-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-15) over the Sam Houston Bearkats Friday on the road at Johnson Coliseum.
The non-conference victory improved Georgia State's overall record to 8-2 on the season.
A double-double led the Panthers from Alessia Cappai, who registered 11 kills and 10 digs on the day. Nazli Guvener also added 12 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Marta Lazzarin chipped in with 26 digs to go with nine blocks from Myllena Torquetti.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Panthers fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-16. Georgia State trailed by as many as nine points as Sam Houston never gave up the lead in a set that was tied up just once before the Bearkats took control.
SET 2 | Georgia State fired back from a first-set loss to take the second set 25-16, evening the match at one set apiece. The Panthers took control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and never trailed. Georgia State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to close out the set. Georgia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Sam Houston attacks in the stanza.
SET 3 | Georgia State took a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Bearkats in set three. The Panthers led from the first point on in the set to earn a 25-16 victory. Georgia State opened up as much as an 11-point lead at 21-10 before closing out the set. Georgia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Sam Houston attacks in the stanza.
SET 4 | Georgia State finished off the match with a 25-15 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Georgia State finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 10 points, to finish off the set, collecting 17 kills in the process.
