ATLANTA - Georgia State volleyball, under the direction of second-year head coach Flavia Siqueira, kicks off its 2025 season by hosting Furman, Presbyterian, and West Georgia in the GSU Invitational on Aug. 29-30, with the first match set for 11:00 a.m. Friday at the GSU Sports Arena. The GSU Invitational will feature a neutral-site match before the Panthers open the 2025 play against Presbyterian at 1:30 p.m.
SERIES HISTORY
Georgia State and Presbyterian meet for the 10th time this weekend. The Blue Hose hold a 5-4 advantage in the series and have won the last two matchups. GSU's last win came in 2022 at the Jacksonville Invitational going 3-1. The Panthers are 2-0 at home in the series and claimed the very first meeting in 2009 with a 3-2 victory.
The Panthers and Wolves will square off for just the second time in program history. Georgia State won the inaugural matchup in 2024, sweeping UWG on the road.
Furman holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series, with meetings dating back to 2008. The most recent clash came in 2023 in Greenville, where the Panthers pushed the Paladins in a tight four-set battle but fell 3-1.
ACROSS THE NET
Presbyterian wrapped up 2024 with a 10-19 overall mark, including five wins in Big South competition, and now turns the page under first-year head coach Maddie Moss. Moss, who spent the past two seasons on staff at West Georgia, inherits a roster anchored by outside hitter Courtney Williams. Williams earned Second Team All-Big South honors last fall after producing a team-high 342 points and 288 kills while hitting .265. She also added 87 blocks.
After a strong inaugural DI season, the Wolves are eager to carry momentum into 2025 following a 9–19 record and their first All-ASUN selection. The Wolves return nine players from last year's squad and welcome in a mix of five freshmen and a transfer to round out a 15-player roster. Among the key returners is middle blocker Sanai Young, who started all 28 matches a season ago and finished with 194 kills and 67 blocks. She pairs up with fellow middle Alex Strating, who paced the team with 91 blocks as a freshman, the most by any rookie in the ASUN and eighth overall in the league.
Furman closed the 2024 season with a 13-14 overall record, going 7-8 against Southern Conference opponents. The Paladins lost several impact players from last year's squad, but junior middle blocker Izzy Castelloe is expected to shoulder a larger role in 2025. Castelloe finished as Furman's top blocker with 71 stops while also adding 165 kills and 216 points, ranking third on the team in both categories.
SO INTERNATIONAL
Georgia State's volleyball roster boasts with international flair. Nearly half of the 2025 squad hails from overseas, with eight of the 17 players bringing valuable international experience to the court.
THE SIQUEIRA ERA
Entering her second season at the helm, Head Coach Flavia Siqueira has quickly elevated the Georgia State volleyball program to new heights. During Siqueira's first campaign in 2024, the Panthers capped the season with 17 wins, the most in over a decade, and advanced to the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time since 2021. With Flavia at the forefront, the Panthers enter 2025 on the rise.
SUN BELT DOMINANCE
Georgia State enters the 2025 season coming off a statistically dominant 2024 campaign, ranking near the top of the Sun Belt across nearly every key category. The Panthers finished second in service aces with 185, while holding opponents to a stingy .196 hitting percentage, the fourth lowest in the league. Defensively, they limited opponents to the second-lowest averages in both assists (10.89) and kills (11.81). Offensively, GSU generated consistent firepower, ranking second in total team assists (1,417) and kills (1,496), while also posting the third-most digs (1,828) and fifth-most blocks (248).
GSU INVITATIONAL
The GSU Invitational has been a staple for Georgia State volleyball for 13 seasons, dating back to 1994. The Panthers have battled their way to a 21-20 overall record.
