ATLANTA – Georgia State women's soccer used three second-half goals to power past West Georgia 3-0 on Thursday night at the GSU Soccer Complex, improving to 2-1-0 on the season.
After a scoreless first half despite generating 14 shots, the Panthers broke through early in the second period. Senior forward Reese Gordon opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, finishing a saved shot from sophomore Sunniyah Tucker to give GSU a 1-0 advantage. Just four minutes later, defender Elise Nystrom doubled the lead, heading home a ball from a Gabriela Gonzalez corner kick.
The Panthers put the match out of reach in the 73rd minute when Hina Suzuki scored her fourth goal of the young season, capping the 3-0 victory.
Georgia State dominated the attacking numbers, outshooting West Georgia 29-9 and putting 17 attempts on target. Tucker was active throughout the night, recording a team-high seven shots, while Gonzalez and Aaliyah Faddoul combined for 10 more.
Defensively, the Panthers held strong with goalkeeper Ariana Anderson making six saves to earn her second shutout of the year. Nystrom and Lily Sawyer each went the distance on the back line, anchoring a defense that allowed just three shots on frame in the second half.
West Georgia goalkeeper Emily Sanabria was busy all evening, finishing with 14 saves to keep the Wolves within reach for much of the match.
The Panthers return to action next Thursday as they host in-state rival Kennesaw State at 7:00 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
