Panthers Drop Final Home Game At GSU Baseball Complex

Atlanta, GA - In what is expected to be their final game at their current home stadium, Georgia State Baseball engaged in yet another high scoring affair with visiting Marshall. For the second time in the three game series, both teams scored double-digit runs and needed an extra inning to settle the game. The Panthers met a similar fate to their high-scoring affair on Friday, falling Sunday by a final score of 11-10.

Georgia State got themselves on the board first. Wills Maginnis led off the bottom of the second inning with a double and came around to score when the Herd mishandled Colin Hynek's sacrifice bunt. The lead was short lived, however, as Marshall responded with an RBI single and a three-run home run to flip the lead in their favor, 4-1 in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Kaleb Freeman extended his program record with his 26th double of the season to get the Panthers started. Jesse Donohoe did Freeman one better on the very next pitch, launching a two-run homer to cut the lead to 4-3. Adding to his already productive day, Wills Maginnis put himself in scoring position with a hit by pitch and a steal. Colin Hynek evened the score at 4-4 when he brought Maginnis home with the team's second double and third extra base hit of the frame.

The Panthers looked to bust the game open in the fourth, and did so courtesy of four hits - three of which were doubles - en route to a five run inning. Donohoe's second trip around the bases ended with a run scored on a wild pitch, putting Georgia State on top by a score of 9-4.

After putting up just one run combined in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, the Thundering Herd came alive suddenly in the eighth. Ethan Murdoch pushed across the team's sixth run and Elijah Vogelsong tied the game up with the team's second three-run home run of the afternoon, 9-9 after eight.

After Marshall took the lead, 10-9 in the top of the ninth, the Panthers were down to their last out in hopes of extending the game. Carter Bailey's double allowed Wills Maginnis to score the tying run with ease, but Nick Garagozzo's attempt to end the game was snuffed out when he was tagged by the catcher just shy of home plate.

Marshall retook the lead in the top of the 10th inning and held off the Panthers to complete the comeback victory and the series sweep.

Head coach Brad Stromdahl, "They (Marshall) did a great job getting big hits when they needed them and getting big outs when they needed them as well. We had two chances to win two games and we just fell a little bit short. Now we have an opportunity to go up to Appalachian State this week and give ourselves a chance."
