Atlanta, GA – A bullpen game for both sides turned into a pitching duel on Tuesday night, as the Georgia State baseball team and the visiting West Georgia Wolves maintained a scoreless tie through seven full innings. The Panthers' offense came alive just in time, plating four in the bottom of the eighth to improve to 24-18 on the season.
Both squads utilized their bullpens early on in Tuesday's game, with the two starters combining for just three innings pitched. The Wolves used five total pitchers to keep the Panthers scoreless through seven, while the hosts relied on three scoreless relief frames from
Dylan Matela and another four from
Brian Crooms to hold off the visitors through eight. Matela struck out five batters in his three innings of work.
The war of attrition finally gave way in the bottom of the eighth when a perfectly placed bunt by
Carter Bailey put runners on first and second with no outs.
Michael Maginnis plated the first run of the game in the next at-bat, bringing pinch runner
John Beverley home with an RBI-single. Bailey would go on to score on a wild pitch and
Michael Maginnis on a sacrifice fly from his brother
Wills Maginnis. A wild pickoff attempt allowed
Kaleb Freeman to score from second base, giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead that they would carry into the ninth.
With the lead suddenly in their favor, the Panthers turned to closer
Jacob Crews to close things out in the ninth. The reliever let one runner on base but fanned two others to complete the combined shutout, 4-0.
