ATLANTA – Georgia State dropped a high-scoring battle to Coastal Carolina, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex. Despite tallying 10 hits and three multi-run innings, the Panthers couldn't keep pace with the Chanticleers' patient and explosive offense.
The loss drops Georgia State to 22-15 overall and 8-6 in Sun Belt play, while Coastal improves to 26-9 and 10-4 in the conference.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Panthers responded with an RBI single from Jesse Donohoe to cut the deficit in half. Coastal Carolina kept the pressure on, however, adding runs in each of the next four innings—including a five-run fourth—to build a commanding 13-5 lead heading into the late frames.
Offensively, Georgia State showed fight throughout. Colin Hynek launched a solo homer in the fifth, and Michael Maginnis added a solo shot in the sixth. Donohoe led the offense with three RBI, including a two-run single in the eighth. Jae Williams also doubled and drove in a run, while Cooper Milford and Kaleb Freeman added doubles of their own.
Despite a tough outing for the Panther pitching staff—which allowed 14 runs on 10 hits and 14 walks—Nick Holbrook and Carlos Carmona combined to allow just one unearned run over the final three innings.
The loss was charged to Jake Hembree (0-1), who gave up seven runs in 3.2 innings. Coastal's Darin Horn (2-1) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out three.
Georgia State will look to bounce back in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
